Remarkable heritage!
Teillan Castle , a listed historical monument, is located 3 kilometers south of the village of Aimargues. In the 12th century, it was sold to the Psalmody Abbey.
Thanks to a decree of 1635, the owners of the château were authorized to gather Roman remains in the magnificent park. The park is also listed as a Historical Monument . Landscaped and romantic, it was designed in the 19th century around exceptional Roman stelae and boundary stones. Beautiful specimens of trees can be admired there: ginkgo biloba, sequoia, and photinia.
Also open to visitors are three remarkable buildings: the waterwheel, the 16th-century dovecote, and the chapter house in the main building of the castle. The dovecote, with its bishop's mitre vault, was built of dressed stone around 1600 and features an interior wooden revolving ladder. The vaulted room on the ground floor served as a prison for the lord of the manor. The waterwheel, or noria, connected to the Vidourle River by an underground aqueduct, dates from 1609. Its superstructure was modified during the Restoration period to create a large basin fed by a stone spillway, replacing the old wooden trough. The mechanism was continuously maintained until around 1920, as it irrigated the kitchen garden.
